Construction-Related Questions

  1. When will construction begin and end?
Ground was broken Sunday, March 2, 2008, and demoltion began Monday, March 17. While the contractor has until January 14, 2009, to complete the project, everything is expected to be finished by the end of November 2008.
  2. What's going on with the elevator?
The elevator began operation March 7, 2008. Praise God!
  3. Will parking be affected?
The parking lot across Fifth Street, as well as the driveway in front of the building, will be unaffected by construction. The lot at the south end of the building is being used as an interim playground for the school, so it will not be available for parking. Saint Luke's Lutheran Church on Sixth Street has graciously allowed us to use their lot for overflow parking.
  4. Will the door by the main office remain accessible?
Yes; however, pick-up at the end of the school day will occur at the main church entrance as an added safety precaution.

School-Related Questions

  1. Will the children be safe?
Safety has been the number one concern of both the staff and the contractor. Temporary walls have been built to isolate the work area from the part of the building that will continue to be in use, but even so, some classes are being relocated during construction.
  2. How will drop-off and pick-up be affected?
The driveway in front of the school will remain open throughout construction. Drop-off will continue at the door by the main office (since construction will not be starting until after 8:00 a.m.); however, pick-up will happen at the main church entrance.
  3. Where will the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes meet?
The Kindergarten class will be in the Fellowship Hall for the rest of the year. Pre-K will be moved to the Nursery during those few weeks of demolition. They will return to their regular classroom when demolition is completed.
  4. What will happen to activities normally taking place in the Fellowship Hall?
Those activities will be moved if they take place during the school day. We'll find a spot somewhere! Other activities, after school hours, will have to be scheduled through the office. But many will have to find another place to meet.
  5. What about gym classes and outdoor recess?
Gym classes will be in the cafeteria as students will be eating lunch in their rooms. Pray for a beautiful spring because we will have gym outside in the field across the street. Outdoor recess will be in the south parking lot that we are closing off.
  6. Will the cafeteria continue to be used as such?
It will serve as our gym during cold weather weeks. Students will eat in their rooms.
  7. Where will sports teams practice?
Basketball has finished so that is not an issue this year. Track and softball will be practicing outside.
  8. Will it be noisy?
Yes; that is unavoidable. However, relocation of the classes closest to the construction will mitigate a lot of the problem.
